ProKart Challenge North Round 2 Report

The Team Aluminos kart racing squad continued its support of the ProKart Challenge program this past weekend, competing at the second round of the organization’s Northern series at the Infineon Raceway Karting Center. The Sonoma, CA facility is home turf for the Team Aluminos squad and while they remain focused on the continuing development of the GP Kart and their in-house engine work, they were also able to take advantage of zero travel time to relax and enjoy the sport they love. Three drivers flew the Aluminos colors on the weekend, including owner Rob Soares, who went ‘head over heals’ in an effort to win his main event.

Soares earned the top qualifier honors in the TaG Masters Heavy division, only to be removed from the classification for missing a neck brace. Despite the questionable ruling, Soares focused on the task at hand, moving from the tail of the field to the front. He did just that, advancing to P1 by lap three, reaching on the tail of the lead group from the TaG Masters Light division. Trouble erupted, however, as the driver ahead of Soares got on the binders too early heading into a corner and contact was made. The result sent Soares up and over, with the kart coming down on top of him. After kicking the kart off, Soares walked back to the pits with a sore hand. Unfortunately, the PKC officials removed Soares from the results again with the call of rough driving.

With the team working closely with driver instructor/tuner Tom Dyer and George Tavares - the Aluminos in-house engine builder and data analysis expert - the squad turned in an impressive group performance. G2 pilot Blair Chang earned his first PKC South podium of the year, while S3 team driver Marc Elliott notched his second trip to the rostrum.
